| New | Change | |
|---|---|---|
| Salary | $110,000 | +$10,000 |
| Income tax | $23,520 | −$3,000 |
| Medicare levy | $2,200 | −$200 |
| Take-home after all tax | $84,280 | +$6,800 |
Full-year figures for 2026-27: single, resident all year, with appropriate hospital cover, no HELP debt. A rise part-way through the year is spread across fewer pays, so the first year's change is smaller. Taxes in the Change column show what they take from your take-home.
Examples
2026-27, full year, single resident with hospital cover.
| Rise | Extra a year | With HELP |
|---|---|---|
| $60k to $65k | $3,325 | $3,325 |
| $80k to $90k | $6,800 | $5,300 |
| $100k to $110k | $6,800 | $5,300 |
| $125k to $140k | $9,850 | $7,395 |
| $150k to $170k | $12,200 | $8,800 |
| $180k to $200k | $11,400 | $8,976 |
| $220k to $250k | $11,400 | $8,400 |
The $125,000 to $140,000 row crosses the $135,000 tax bracket, so you keep 65.7% of the rise. With a study loan, HELP takes another 15c to 17c of each extra dollar on most of these rises, and 10% of all repayment income from $186,051.
How we calculate
- Both salaries are run through the same 2026-27 take-home calculation: resident tax rates less the low income tax offset (up to $700, nil from $66,667), the 2% Medicare levy and, if you have a study loan, the compulsory HELP repayment. Assumes an Australian resident for tax all year, with the tax-free threshold.
- Without hospital cover, the Medicare levy surcharge applies at the rate for your income. It is charged on all your taxable income, so a rise that crosses a threshold can cost more than the rise itself adds.
- Division 293 tax is 15% on the lesser of your concessional contributions and the amount by which income plus those contributions exceed $250,000. Like the surcharge, it is billed after your return, so the monthly and fortnightly pay figures leave both out.
- Employer super is 12% of the new salary, up to the $270,830 maximum contribution base.
- Full-year figures. Not modelled: salary sacrifice, fringe benefits, family surcharge thresholds, tax offsets other than the low income tax offset, Medicare levy reductions or exemptions, and pay-slip withholding differences.
Questions
Can a pay rise leave me worse off?
If you have hospital cover, no. Income tax can't: it only applies the higher rate to the dollars above each bracket. The Medicare levy surcharge is different. Without hospital cover, crossing $105,000 makes 1% apply to all your taxable income, so a small rise just over that line can leave you behind until the rise is big enough to cover it.
How much of a $10,000 rise do I keep?
On $100,000 to $110,000 you keep $6,800 (68.0%). With a HECS-HELP debt it is $5,300.
Does a rise increase my employer super?
Yes, by 12% of the rise, until your earnings from that employer reach $270,830 a year. See the super guarantee cap calculator.
