Take-home pay calculator 2026-27
What a high salary really nets after income tax, the Medicare levy, the Medicare levy surcharge and Division 293 tax, plus what lands in your super. The surcharge and Division 293 arrive after your tax return, so we show them separately from your pay. Add a study loan to include HECS-HELP.

Above about $190,000 each extra dollar is taxed at 47% including Medicare. Division 293 starts once income plus concessional contributions pass $250,000, and reaches $4,875 when your only contributions are the maximum SG (more with salary sacrifice or carry-forward).
How we calculate
- Income tax uses the 2026-27 resident rates, less the low income tax offset where it applies (up to $700, nil from $66,667). The Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income.
- With a study loan, the compulsory HELP repayment uses the 2026-27 marginal system on repayment income (taxable income plus salary sacrifice to super). It is usually withheld from pay once you tell your employer.
- "In your pay" is salary less salary sacrifice, income tax and the Medicare levy, spread evenly across the year. Your pay slip uses ATO withholding tables, so it can differ by a few dollars.
- The Medicare levy surcharge is not withheld from pay. It is assessed with your tax return: 1% to 1.5% of taxable income for a single person without private hospital cover, once income for surcharge purposes passes $105,000.
- Division 293 tax is 15% on the lesser of your concessional contributions and the amount by which income plus those contributions exceed $250,000. The ATO bills it to you after your return; you can pay it yourself or elect to release it from super (an election within 60 days of the assessment that cannot be reversed).
- Super: employer SG at 12% of salary (including any salary sacrifice) up to the $270,830 base, less the 15% contributions tax your fund pays.
- Assumes a single person, resident all year, earning above the Medicare levy low-income threshold (the levy reduction is not modelled), no fringe benefits or investment losses, and no carry-forward contributions. Family surcharge thresholds and children are not modelled (see rates).
Questions
Why is take-home after all tax lower than my pay slip?
Two taxes are not taken out of your pay. The Medicare levy surcharge (if you have no hospital cover) and Division 293 tax arrive with or after your tax return. On a $300,000 salary with no hospital cover, that is about $9,375 a year in tax billed after your return.
Is Division 293 counted in this calculator's take-home?
Yes, by default. It is a tax assessed to you by the ATO, so it comes off take-home after all tax. If you choose to pay it from super, it comes off your super balance instead and your cash take-home is higher.
Does salary sacrifice avoid the Medicare levy surcharge?
No. Salary-sacrificed super is a reportable super contribution, which is added back when the ATO works out income for surcharge purposes. See the Medicare levy surcharge calculator.
Does a bigger salary mean more employer super?
Only up to $270,830. Above that your employer does not have to pay more SG. See the super guarantee cap calculator.
